CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

In support of KUOW’s editorial objectives, collaborate with reporters and producers to edit content and oversee updates to KUOW’s website, KUOW.org. Guide coverage of a beat(s)/area of expertise/broad variety of assignments – break stories and maintain a wide variety of sources. This is a single-class, stand-alone series.

BASIC FUNCTION

Enhance KUOW radio’s audio content in the digital space, including the station’s website KUOW.org. Work with KUOW reporters, editors, program producers and the web team to edit and create web content in support of KUOW’s core service. Pitch and report breaking news and feature stories.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under the supervision of the Online Managing Editor, collaborate with reporters and producers to edit content and oversee updates to KUOW.org. Create web pages that meet KUOW.org design standards, incorporating multimedia, interactive tools and new technologies into KUOW.org page design. Work with KUOW programming editors to schedule and publish multimedia features and produce enterprise news reports for digital.

Post breaking news and developing stories relevant to Washington State, with a focus on the Puget Sound region. Identify and monitor trends in local news to create relevant original online content on a daily basis. Cultivate sources and collect and verify information by adhering to KUOW’s Ethics Policy.

Develop ideas/proposals for online audience, contribute news reports to website, pitch and report breaking news and feature stories, and deliver substantive reports quickly on a deadline on varied subjects.

Develop an online audience and identify new opportunities for engagement working with the Social Media Producer and Director of Community Engagement

Continually advance a working knowledge of emerging web technologies and best practices in online reporting and provide training in these areas to station staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field and three years of professional experience in journalism or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Requires experience in creating content for online presentation, including writing, editing, graphic design principles, basic HTML, photography, photo editing, and working with content management systems.
