CLASS SERIES CONCEPT
Serve as primary on-air voice for morning and afternoon drive team, providing daily news and magazine programming on KUOW radio. This is a single-class series.
BASIC FUNCTION
During morning and afternoon drive times, when KUOW radio has its largest audiences, serve as KUOW radio’s primary voice of local news. Relay timely and relevant local news.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under the supervision of the Editor, write, produce and execute a timely and thorough news program with professional on-air presence and with authority in addition to regular, personable host updates. Contribute to the development of an online voice and presence for KUOW.
Serve as “first responder” in breaking news situations that may require extended working hours and also meet hourly and daily filing deadlines. Cultivate local, regional, national, and international sources and maintain current knowledge of the local news landscape to offer context to national stories.
Develop and host locally-relevant local newscasts within the news magazine. Contribute to long-range editorial planning including booking and conducting interviews with newsmakers or KUOW reporters. Contribute to the development of an online voice and presence and to regular reviews of program performance in consultation with content leadership.
Interact with the public via social media platforms, such as Twitter and Facebook, and serve as a public representative for KUOW, making public appearances on behalf of the station.

Typical working titles include “AM/PM News Host”, “News Host” or “Host”;
Working with the Senior Producer, write, produce and execute a timely and thorough news program;
Working with the Senior Producer, develop and host locally-relevant local newscasts within the news magazine;
Contribute to long-range editorial planning including booking and conducting interviews with newsmakers or KUOW reporters;
Contribute to the development of an online voice and presence;
Contribute to regular reviews of program performance in consultation with content leadership;
Serve as “first responder” in breaking news situations that may require extended working hours;
Meet hourly and daily filing deadlines;
Interact with public audience via social media platforms, such as Twitter and Facebook;
Maintain current knowledge of local news landscape to offer context to national stories;

Perform other duties as assigned, including on-air work, such as hosting and on-air fundraising; and
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in communications, broadcast journalism or related field and five years professional broadcast experience or equivalent combination of education/experience ,with a background in news and public affairs and on-air hosting, including specific position requirements relating to hosting, news writing, radio production and audio editing. Requires knowledge of professional broadcast and journalistic standards and practices and a working knowledge of current issues.
