CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Operates radio and associated recording equipment to receive and transmit law enforcement and public safety information and prepare reports.

BASIC FUNCTION

Operate radio dispatching equipment, ACCESS computer, telephones, Enhanced 911 lines and associated recording equipment to receive and transmit law enforcement and related public safety information. Compile information and generate reports.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general direction, use knowledge and experience to perform dispatch duties. In accordance with established procedures and policies, exercise independent judgment when handling routine or emergency calls: refer actions requiring deviation from departmental policy to appropriate command level.

TYPICAL WORK

Receive, screen and prioritize emergency (E-911) and non-emergency telephone calls for service from the public requiring law enforcement attention and relay to police officers or command personnel, as appropriate;

Operate police radio to communicate with police officers. Utilize established codes, maintain record of calls and actions taken by completing written documents;

Communicate with police mobile units and other emergency departments and agencies by using radios, telephones, and computer networks;

Receive maintenance calls from the public regarding water, sewer, natural gas, streets or other service problems and immediately relay to individual(s) designated to handle the problem;

Provide a variety of technical information on all aspects of purpose and functions of the police department;

Handle such matters as general citizen advice and direction, reports of incidents; refer all matters as appropriate to police officers or command personnel; maintains logs or records as applicable;

Operate computer consoles to make inquiries or entries of all relevant law enforcement data such as automobile registration identifications, criminal records, outstanding arrest warrants; printouts as appropriate; operate teletype as necessary. Relay information to police officers and coordinate activities with other police agencies as appropriate to the specific situation;

Interpret City and County maps as necessary in taking messages and in relaying calls to police personnel;

Monitors campus Fire Alarm system;

Monitor police scanner for northend Seattle Police Department activity;

Perform related clerical duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – UW Contract Classified
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS – Classified Non-Union

High school graduation or equivalent AND two years of experience to include dispatching responsibilities and/or completion of an accredited dispatcher program

equivalent education/experience may be substituted for MQ except when there are legal requirements such as licenses/certification/registration.
