BASIC FUNCTION

Lead payroll technical/clerical staff.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Lead payroll technical/clerical staff in payroll-related activities.

TYPICAL WORK

Regularly assign, instruct and check the work of employees;

Interpret payroll, accounting and other payroll-related policies; work with departmental personnel to resolve discrepancies as required; suggest and assist in implementation of new payroll policies and procedures;

Ensure payroll deadlines are met; review and check work for procedural compliance and accuracy; resolve discrepancies;

Authorize, review or enter payroll transaction; assign or perform EDP payroll file maintenance;

Carry out special payroll projects and reports as assigned;

Assist in the selection and evaluation of employees;

Perform the duties of Payroll Technician II;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of full-time experience as a Payroll Technician II, or equivalent; nine quarter hours or six semester hours of college-level course work in accounting may substitute for six months of required experience;

OR

as Associate of Arts Degree, or equivalent in accounting or business may substitute for one year of required experience.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.
