DEFINITION
Perform skilled work in the operation, maintenance, repair, remodeling, and construction of buildings, grounds, machinery, facilities, and equipment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions allocated to this class inspect, repair, install, and maintain physical facilities requiring skilled mechanical and trades work. This class requires a good working knowledge of several related skill fields such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding, and machinist work.
TYPICAL WORK
Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on all types of mechanical equipment such as electrical drive motors, laundry, kitchen, and air-conditioning equipment; change oil, grease, change or clean filters, drive belts, sprockets, shafts, and bearings to ensure proper operation;
Perform maintenance, operation, and repair of electrical, mechanical and structural systems of buildings and utility distribution;
Operate hand and power tools in a skilled manner; fabricate material and equipment in workshops;
Remodel and construct facilities in accordance with project requirements; assist in the preparation of engineering data under the direction of an engineer;
Repair windows, doors, screens, floors, floor coverings, and painted surfaces; install, maintain, and repair electrical connections, switches, circuits, electrical equipment, thermostats, and valves;
May perform minor maintenance on automobiles and equipment such as oil change, lubrication, fix flats, repair lights, fan belts, etc.;
Develop preliminary cost estimates for installations and repairs;
Drive service truck as required, load and unload materials and supplies;
May lead or instruct helpers or other maintenance workers as required;
May fire boilers on a relief basis;
May assist, coordinate and/or work with other trades and crafts journey personnel;
May train students/helpers in other skilled trade areas;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – UW Contract Classified
Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a journey worker, OR full-journey status in a union; OR four years’ applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required.
Examination Requirements:
The examination (including written, E & T, and oral components) will consist of a scored evaluation of the applicant’s experience in mechanical maintenance work; ability to perform demanding physical labor; knowledge of mechanical maintenance and repair techniques; ability to perform general mechanical maintenance and repair of buildings, machinery, and equipment.
