DEFINITION
Operate heavy duty trucks, crawler tractors, and similar vehicles to move earth, equipment and materials; perform minor maintenance and emergency repair on equipment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions allocated to this class are fully qualified journeyworkers who operate heavy equipment such as large trucks with three or more axles and D-4 tractors or larger as a regular and permanent activity. Operators are required to have an unrestricted driver’s license. Truck driving is normally restricted to heavy duty on-site campus work incidental to other duties.
TYPICAL WORK
Operate trucks, crawler tractors, power cranes, shovels, graders, and related equipment to move dirt, rock, equipment, passengers, and materials;
Operate tractor to clear land, build road ways and parking lots; trim backfills and smooth grades from survey stakes and plans;
Operate equipment to demolish and remove debris on construction and alteration projects; remove snow from streets, roads and parking lots;
Operate road watering, oiling and rolling equipment;
Grease, oil, service and make minor repairs to equipment; keep equipment in good working order; make emergency adjustments on equipment; assist mechanic in major repairs;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – UW Contract Classified
Three years of experience in operation of heavy equipment OR full journey status as Heavy Equipment Operator by work experience, vocational or trade school apprenticeship program or any combination of the above. Possession of valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Examination Requirements:
The examination (including written, E & T and oral components) will consist of experience in operating heavy equipment, training in heavy equipment operation, knowledge of safety practices, knowledge of maintenance and repair procedures, ability to do strenuous physical labor, and demonstrated ability to safely operate the specific equipment required for the job.
