Financial Access Specialist Supervisor

BASIC FUNCTION

Supervise Financial Access Specialists and/or other assigned staff;

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations, and recommend disciplinary actions.

TYPICAL WORK

Supervise assigned staff ensuring compliance with regulatory agency and third-party payer requirements and hospital policies and procedures;

Review referrals of unsponsored patients and assign caseloads based on perceived complexity; monitor progress of assigned cases;

Review work in process, completed applications, and required documentation for compliance with department, hospital, regulatory agency and third-party payer policies;

Estimate hospital and professional charges, calculate anticipated total charges and patient financial responsibility; communicate to patients the potential financial responsibility, necessary deposits, and facilitate collection of amount owed;

Advise patients and family members in accessing hospital, social, financial, and community services by consulting and making referrals to social workers, patient care coordinators, nursing liaisons, outside agencies and legal services;

Evaluate, develop, and implement policies and procedures for the department; recommend appropriate changes to hospital policies;

Review and resolve patient complaints;

Represent the unit to regulatory agency or third-party payer staff; attend Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) community meetings or other meetings hosted by third party payers;

Review and interpret new insurance and regulatory agency requirements; identify topics for and develop training sessions;

Advise hospital staff regarding policies and eligibility criteria of medical assistance programs for discharge planning;

Attend continuing education workshops and other training activities to keep up to date with current hospital practices and payer requirements;

Participate in and/or lead special project work;

Prepare administrative reports;

May perform the work of Financial Access Specialists;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – UW Contract Classified

Bachelor’s Degree in related field AND four years of experience as a Patient Access Specialist OR High School graduation or equivalent and four years experience as a Patient Access Specialist and a UW Supervisory Skill Certificate; OR Equivalent education/experience.
