BASIC FUNCTION
Conduct clinical diagnostic procedures and research activities in a clinical cytology laboratory; direct the work of cytotechnologists and other assigned staff; and perform administrative procedures in support of the laboratory operation.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Develop quality assurance reports; perform quality control assessments; and provide work direction to cytotechnologists, lab assistants, and other assigned staff.
TYPICAL WORK
Provide work direction to Cytotechnologist 1’s, lab assistants, and other assigned staff;
Collect follow-up data of patients who have had cytologic exams; assimilate data and develop quality assurance reports;
Inform physicians immediately of the final report on all suspicious and positive gynecological and non-gynecological cytology cases;
Perform quality control stain checks and assessments;
Perform gynecological Pap quality control slide reviews;
Develop and test cytology procedures; adapt and implement procedures for the laboratory;
Perform the work of Cytotechnologist 1;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor of Science Degree
AND
Graduation from an Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) accredited school of cytotechnology or other organization approved by Health and Human Services (HHS)
AND
American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Registry (BOR) certification as a Cytotechnologist (CT) or Specialist in Cytotechnology (SCT).
AND
At least 3 years full-time experience as a cytotechnologist within the preceding 10 years.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
