BASIC FUNCTION
Participate in on-the-job training; learn to perform clinical diagnostic eye
examinations, imaging, and procedures.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under direct supervision, learn to assist healthcare professionals in clinical diagnostic eye examinations, imaging, and procedures. As competency check-offs allow during the course of the training program, learn to independently perform assigned tasks to support clinic operations in tandem with skill reinforcement and refinement.
TYPICAL WORK
Participate in on-the-job training to:
Build skills to perform tests such as visual acuity assessments, visual field determinations, intraocular pressure checks using a variety of devices, and other objective eye assessments;
Build skills to perform Humphrey Visual Field testing, and other imaging modalities;
Build skills to perform manifest refractions;
Build skills to assist with minor in-office procedures;
Document chief complaint and medical history in the electronic medical record;
Report results to physician by documenting in the electronic medical record and/or
providing verbal reports;
Review medical records and note need for specific testing prior to physician examination;
Administer topical medications, such as eye drops, ointments, and irrigating solutions to the eye, under physician direction;
Develop advanced skills to be able to perform the work of an Ophthalmic Technician 1;
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school graduation or GED
Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.
