BASIC FUNCTION

Coordinate the clerical and support activities for patient care on a nursing unit.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general supervision, assist in daily functioning of the unit and patient care, using designated UW and Medical Center processes and procedures.

TYPICAL WORK

Assist with patient admissions, discharges and transfers;

Answer patient intercom system effectively; responds appropriately to patient’s needs and/or alerts/refers to other unit staff members;

Perform general clerical duties such as answering and screening telephone calls, processing the mail, assembling and sending information to patients, inventorying, ordering and stocking supplies; and maintain record of ordered services;

Manage visitor access and provides education regarding unit specific policies and procedures;

Secure and release patient valuables and belongings;

Assist in orienting and training new staff;

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School graduation or equivalent AND one year of healthcare, administrative, or customer service experience.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.
