BASIC FUNCTION

Operate computer equipment.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Second-level class of series. Fully-qualified working level. Under general supervision, perform technical tasks related to computer operations, such as setting up, adjusting, readying and operating computers and peripheral equipment.

TYPICAL WORK

Operate computers and peripheral equipment including setting up and adjusting according to operating instructions;

Prepare reports of operating records; programs and machine malfunctions along with corrective actions taken; maintain program documentation and related production backup material;

Receive, store and maintain computer supplies inventory;

Perform minimal operational maintenance tasks such as servicing tape, disk, card, print devices and peripheral equipment;

Operate computer-related equipment such as graphic plotters, remote job entry stations;

May perform tape library functions;

May communicate with remote terminal users through computer console;

May assist in staff orientation;

May perform the duties of Computer Operator I;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – UW Contract Classified

One year of full-time experience as a Computer Operator I, or equivalent; OR six months of experience as a Computer Operator I, or equivalent and six months of applicable training; OR six months of experience as a Computer Operator I, or equivalent and one year of experience as a Data control Technician I.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
