BASIC FUNCTION
Supervise advanced cardiovascular technologists and other assigned staff; perform cardiac catheterization procedures; research and develop new techniques and maintain quality control.In the Regional Heart Center in the University of Washington Medical Center, assist physicians with complex cardiovascular procedures in the clinical research phase or in the newly-developed FDA-approved period before available in community hospitals, such as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). Conduct a variety of technical procedures in a catheterization laboratory and assist with and monitor invasive procedures and studies. Operate imaging and physiological equipment, administer patient care services and collect and record data.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary actions. Under general direction, oversee the technical operation of a cardiac catheterization laboratory. Under general direction, perform complex technical procedures and assist physicians during complex cardiovascular procedures in the clinical research phase or newly-developed FDA-approved period before available in community hospitals, including but not limited to Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair (TMVR/MitraClip), Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Implantation (TMVI) as well as high-risk, complex coronary, structural, or electrophysiological procedures that have passed the clinical research stage.
TYPICAL WORK
With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary actions.
Perform diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterizations and other related procedures. Insert small catheters through a needle into the blood vessels and into the heart so that X-rays, angiograms and other recordings can be obtained to determine the heart’s structure and function;
Prepare and assist with transcatheter and transapical cardiovascular delivery systems and devices. Support complex procedures that are accessed only via clinical trial, FDA-regulated emergent use, or continued access protocols at research hospitals. Crimp and load Aortic, Pulmonary and Mitral heart valves; assist with new and emerging techniques to treat and repair structural, coronary, vascular, and electrophysiologic heart conditions;
Operate a wide variety of angiography and imaging equipment to produce a digital video, physiologic waveform record using high resolution recording systems; prepare and operate IntraVascular UltraSound (IVUS) and IntraCardiac Echocardiography (ICE) equipment; ensure image capture in digital archiving system (CVPACS);
Select appropriate equipment to use for Electrophysiology procedures including diagnostic EP studies, ablations and cardiac rhythm management (CRM) device implants;
May assist with investigational procedures as approved by the UW Medicine Institutional Review Board;
Perform calibration on and operate a variety of physiological equipment and transducers to record and monitor waveforms and pressures in the heart chambers and major vessels;
Assists in clinical research data collection;
Monitors, circulates or performs surgical scrub duties in cardiac procedures such as heart catheterization, thermodilution studies, pacemaker studies, transseptal procedures, intra-aortic balloon pump procedures, angioplasty procedures, angiography studies, heart biopsy and implantation of ventricular assist devices;
Administer patient care services such as intravenous therapy and medication, wound dressing and incision care, oxygen and suction; prepare patients for examinations including surgical skin prep, explanation of procedures and physicians’ orders; prepare and set up surgical trays and materials for the procedures utilizing sterile techniques; monitor patient’s condition during transport to unit;
Perform quality control tests; adjust and perform minor maintenance on cardiac catheterization equipment;
Participate in continuous quality improvement activities; collect and enter quality data into appropriate information system;
Maintain log of procedures; enter physiologic and clinical data in CardioVascular Information System (CVIS);
Demonstrate cardiac techniques to students; precept new staff as needed;
Perform emergency call responsibilities;
May obtain blood samples;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Associate of Arts (AA) degree from an accredited Interventional Cardiovascular Technologist (CVT) Program AND registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) AND Licensure by the State of Washington as a Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (CIS)
OR
Associate of Arts (AA) degree from an accredited Radiologic Technologist Program AND Registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (AART) AND Licensure by the State of Washington as a Radiologic Technologist (RT)
AND
Two years of experience as a Cardiac Technologist Lead or equivalent position AND certification in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) within four months from date of hire.
OR
Four years of experience as a Cardiac Technologist or equivalent position may substitute for the two years of experience as a Cardiac Technologist Lead.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license.
