CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Design, develop and maintain database structures that effectively and efficiently support data collection, input and analysis of multi-focused research projects.  Assist with the development of data collection instruments and analytical strategies, conduct statistical analysis, and participate in the preparation of results for reports, publications and/or presentations.

If the primary focus is coordination of research activities for a significant research project or multiple smaller research projects, then a Research Coordinator job profile may be more appropriate. If the primary focus is performing research, then a Research Scientist/Engineer job profile may be more appropriate

BASIC FUNCTION

This is an advanced professional research consultant recognized as an expert in field of specialization. Working closely with principal investigators and members of the research team, serve as a consultant to research groups in matters of data integration, quality control, visualization and analysis. Responsible for providing leadership in the development of databases, data management, data cleaning, data documentation and programming for multi-site studies.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Works independently with no oversight required in the evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation/modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria; reports significant issues as necessary. Applies advanced knowledge to the completion of complex, highly specialized assignments/projects.

TYPICAL WORK

Provide statistical and computer programming support, data management and data documentation, including managing and coordinating all aspects of data merging, cleaning and analyzing.

Oversee the management of both quantitative and qualitative data including developing collection systems, evaluation processes and quality controls while adhering to all compliance requirements; initiate and perform data analyses.

Implement statistical strategies for various study designs to ensure correct application and interpretation of statistical models; assess data accuracy and applicability within the stated goals, objectives and strategic development plan; use statistical modeling to support quality and accuracy of data and analytics; maintain documentation on analyses and procedures.

Coordinate and manage data dissemination for multiple research programs; manage transmittal of data files with off-site research collaborators.

Identify and determine data distribution protocols; collaborate with data collection staff to ensure adherence to assessment protocols; and apply continuous quality improvement tools to assess and improve practices.

Monitor and track overall project timelines and deliverables; work with process partners to meet project metrics and timelines; provide timely updates to the principal investigator on concerns/issues that might impact the goals of the project.

Create and disseminate overall project outcomes to sponsor, department leadership and regional partners; prepare technical reports, creating tables, figures and written summaries of study results; and prepare and/or contribute to papers/manuscripts for presentation or publication.

Develop and maintain strong professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders (department leadership, collaborators, funders, etc.); attend and actively participate in scientific and staff meetings; represent the department in campus, regional and national organizations and events.

Provide statistical and analytical support for grant proposals, manuscripts and presentations; provide statistical consultation to investigators, staff, and students.

May supervise research and support staff, assigning, overseeing and evaluating the work of project staff, students and interns; and provide training and mentoring of assigned research program/project staff.

Perform the duties of Research Consultant 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Doctoral degree in a related field and two years of relevant experience.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

CIVIL SERVICE EXEMPTION

Research: Individuals having formal academic preparation at least at the Bachelor’s level or demonstrated professional competence in a specific field of research, and having responsibility for or assisting in one or more of the following tasks: identifying and defining research problems; designing approaches or hypotheses to be tested and the methodology to be used; designing specific phases of research projects; analyzing results; developing conclusions and hypotheses; presenting research results in publishable form; and/or obtaining research grants.
