CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Within the UW Libraries, support information technology operations in one or more areas such as but not limited to, web services and applications, release engineering, computing infrastructure, database development or administration, network administration, front and back-end application development or administration, software engineering, datacenter infrastructure, and large-scale desktop management. This is a stand-alone job class.

BASIC FUNCTION

Provide technical expertise in one or more areas of computing and networking technology, requiring a broad knowledge of hardware, software, networking, user, web and cloud technologies, along with an ability to communicate on technical subjects effectively with technical and non-technical libraries staff.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general supervision, provide complex computing support for the Libraries & UW Press, including but not limited to the design, troubleshooting, development, integration, and implementation of systems and services in one or more of the following areas:

IT platforms both cloud and on-premises;
UI/UX, Web applications and services both on-premises and hosted; and
User support and large-scale desktop management and deployment.
May serve as a working supervisor in a Libraries IT help desk or IT user support services unit.

Positions performing the work of this job profile that supervise at least 1.0 FTE regular, non-temporary PLE positions must be placed in the appropriate supervisory bargaining unit job code.

TYPICAL WORK

Perform one or more computer and network system related activities such as troubleshooting, programming, systems analysis, database development, complex report development, system security management, application development, system infrastructure design, or data center management to meet the systems and analysis needs of the libraries;

Provide detailed requirements analysis and recommendations for computing environment, software applications, and system infrastructure, which includes cloud service engineering and hardware acquisition, software and hardware acquisitions, and/or upgrades;

Install, configure, and support server, desktop, and database configurations to meet libraries technology needs;

Plan, integrate, and automate large-scale desktop deployment (e.g. Microsoft Desktop Toolkit) and desktop management;

Test, monitor, and optimize systems and code and assist with the development of test plans for usability, performance, and adherence to libraries internal standards;

Refactor existing code to improve efficiency, operability, and performance;

Plan, manage and test backup and recovery plans;

Understand and apply user management, authentication and authorization;

Perform technical evaluation, installation, maintenance, and support of computer systems software, hardware, and cloud infrastructures;

Design, build, and integrate websites, webservices, and web applications;

Design user-centered interfaces and systems by conducting and applying UX research, accessibility standards, and building information architecture;

Develop, troubleshoot and maintain one or more disciplinary-specific computing systems such as Integrated Library Systems (ILS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), TItle Management Systems (eg. AllBooks), Inventory systems (eg. Caiasoft), Preservation/Special Collections (eg. Archivematica), etc.;

Conduct research regarding system upgrades, integration, and maintenance initiatives;

Work with staff and IT administrators to troubleshoot security and privacy issues;

Collaborate with other units on space planning and;

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related and 2 years of related experience

OR

Equivalent combination of education/experience.

CLASS SERVICE EXEMPTION

Senior Computer Systems and Network Programming.
