CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Within the Institute for Health Metrics Evaluation (IHME), provide specialized oversight and guidance of extraction processes from multiple data sources according to set protocols.

BASIC FUNCTION

Perform quality assurance and diagnostics of data and databases in support of assigned research team, other IHME research teams and/or external partners, contributors and stakeholders.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general supervision, independently implement quality control measures to ensure that research teams are able to incorporate accurate data into phases of the analytic or research process, and/or for use in technical presentations and publications.

The Difference between an IHME Data Extraction Analyst and an IHME Data Analyst is that the majority of time of positions in this classification is devoted to data extraction.

TYPICAL WORK

Work with researchers to identify the data source, understand the context of the data and ensure that the data is relevant to the analysis;

Extract, format, and transform data according to established protocols, from multiple sources to include but not limited to technical publications, surveys, censuses, administrative records, vital registration systems and disease registries;

Develop protocols to audit datasets and routine extraction processes, rectify issues, and systematize processes for future work;

Maintain databases containing health data from multiple sources, such as surveys, vital registration systems, administrative records, and publications;

Execute queries on databases in response to request for information from IHME researchers, internal and external collaborators, stakeholders and/or the public;

Perform quality assurance and routine diagnostics on data and databases;

Assess and contribute to the development of extraction criteria, and the organization and storage of data;

Create and implement ways to document and store data, analytic engines, and data visualizations as needed;

Create and document methods for extracting data, organizing data sources and managing data;

Explain data extraction and analytic processes to internal and/or external collaborators;

Archive, catalog, and annotate datasets according to institutional standards;

Transform and format data sets for use in ongoing analyses;

Catalogue datasets into databases;

Create tables, figures, and charts for presentations and/or publications;

Provide referencing and other support for publications and/or presentations;

Work with other team members to assist with relevant tasks, facilitate learning new skills, and to help resolve emerging problems on different projects;

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in a Science discipline, Global Health, Public Health or related and two years of related experience

Equivalent combination of education/experience.
