CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Collect information and report stories to the public via audio, print, or video for all KUOW platforms, including broadcast, web, social media, and podcasts.

This is the third level in a three-level series; the preceding level is Reporter 2.

BASIC FUNCTION

Pitch and report in-depth, high-risk, sensitive, and complex stories for KUOW programming.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Work with minimal oversight to identify and report stories independently or as assigned by senior staff. Report stories at an expert level for broadcast, podcasts, web, social media, and events.

This class is distinguished from the Reporter 2 by the increased complexity and/or volume of high-level reporting, including at least one or more of the following:

  • Meet increased filing deadlines and productivity expectations of a Reporter 3 as determined by senior staff;
  • Engage in long-term investigative work on a consistent basis with high importance and consequence that breaks news;
  • Host a podcast series in addition to delivering the high reporting yield expected of a Reporter 3 as determined by senior staff.

TYPICAL WORK

Independently shape, give feedback and provide strategic guidance on broad KUOW coverage of a specific beat and/or area of expertise across all formats, including digital, broadcast shows or podcasts.

Routinely share and suggest sources for broad KUOW coverage of a beat or an area of expertise.

Regularly report high-stakes stories with expert-level accuracy, completeness and fairness.

Develop consistent working relationships with national public broadcasting organizations such as NPR to deliver reporting that merits national coverage.

Appear regularly on broadcast, podcasts, and at KUOW community events to establish audience recognition as the lead voice of KUOW coverage of a defined beat and/or area of expertise.

Meet filing deadlines and productivity expectations of a Reporter 3 as determined by senior staff.

Collaborate with outside partner organizations on special projects such as audio documentaries and podcast series.

Perform duties of Reporter 1 and 2.

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and ten years of professional journalism experience.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

CIVIL SERVICE EXEMPTION

Public Information: Managerial or professional level positions having substantial responsibility for planning and directing the development and communication of information designed to keep the public informed of the institution’s programs, accomplishments, and point of view. Individuals exercise discretion in determining content of written copy. Other duties may include creating ideas, laying out artwork, contacting media representatives, and representing the institution directly before the general public.
