CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Develop and produce stories and their essential elements. Key aspects of production include creating the pitch, script, tone audio and/or video components for KUOW programming. Generate audio, print, or video content that will be seen and heard across various KUOW platforms, such as broadcast, web, social media, and podcasts.

This is the second level of a four-level series; the next level is Producer 3.

BASIC FUNCTION

Support production of stories and segments for KUOW programming. Demonstrate intermediate level proficiency in key aspects of production. Complete work assignments to journalistic standards.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Work under general supervision to support podcast or broadcast programs. Possess competence in key aspects of production and perform some duties independently with intermediate knowledge of the subject matter. Work on assigned editorial priorities in close collaboration with supervisor with latitude to complete tasks. Handle basic issues and problems and refer more complex issues to higher-level staff.

TYPICAL WORK

Select content or stories and conduct background research.

Track news and pitch segment ideas based on KUOW editorial priorities.

Produce interviews in the field.

Write scripts, interview questions, and other digital content.

Engineer recording sessions, edit and mix audio in interview clips.

Shoot and edit video for KUOW.

Appear as a guest on broadcast shows and/or on podcasts.

Develop local sources.

Serve as a first responder in breaking news situations.

Perform duties of Producer 1.

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and two years of professional journalism experience.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

CIVIL SERVICE EXEMPTION

Public Information: Managerial or professional level positions having substantial responsibility for planning and directing the development and communication of information designed to keep the public informed of the institution’s programs, accomplishments, and point of view. Individuals exercise discretion in determining content of written copy. Other duties may include creating ideas, laying out artwork, contacting media representatives, and representing the institution directly before the general public.
