CLASS SERIES CONCEPT
Operate an audio board at KUOW radio. This is a single-class series.
BASIC FUNCTION
Perform daily audio board shift including board operation and automation.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Reporting to a Senior Announcer, serve as both technical and on-air engineer for assigned shift, managing broadcast board operation. Monitor KUOW communications and newswires, NPR and other sources for updates to programs, breaking news and technical issues. Monitor social feeds, changing traffic and weather and provide updates to News Host.
TYPICAL WORK
Typical working title is “Board Operator”;
Serve as both technical and on-air engineer for assigned shift, managing broadcast board operation;
Operate multiple computers using broadcast software such as AudioVault and NewsBoss;
Monitor KUOW communications and newswires, NPR and other sources for updates to programs, breaking news and technical issues;
Monitor social feeds, changing traffic and weather, and provide updates to News Host;
Provide production support including, but not limited to, screening and connecting public audience calls for on-air interviews; assisting with on-air fundraising preparation;
Assist with Public Radio Program Distribution system using software such as Content Depot, PRX, FTP, in conjunction with AudioVault and NewsBoss; and
Back up other shifts when needed;
May make basic on-air announcements such as weather, time, emergency alerts, etc. when host is not available;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in related field and a minimum of one year of professional broadcast experience with a background in production, engineering or on-air hosting, audio engineering skills and knowledge of professional broadcast standards and practices; or equivalent combination of education/experience.
