Required training for hiring authorities

Hiring involves many people in varying roles. Please review the information on this page carefully as training requirements are based on specific roles, as defined below.

  • “Hiring authorities” are those responsible for making the hiring decision, for example a dean, a hiring manager, or a delegate for a dean or hiring manager.
  • “Search committee members” can include anyone participating in any part of the hiring and selection process, including creating the job posting, advertising a job, screening resumes, performing phone screenings, and participating on interview committees.
  • “All hiring roles” includes the roles above as well as anyone participating in a recruiting capacity. “All staff hiring roles” includes all hiring roles for staff positions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the purpose of this training?

This training supports consistent, fair, and compliant hiring practices across UW by equipping participants with practical strategies for competency-based evaluation, confidentiality, and alignment with UW policies. 

Who is required to complete the training?  

Hiring Authorities are required to take the training. Hiring Authority is defined as the person responsible for making the hiring decision (e.g., Dean or their delegate and Hiring Managers and their delegates).   

***Though not required, ALL individuals participating in hiring activities would benefit from taking the training and are encouraged to do so (e.g., search committee members and others involved in candidate evaluation).*** 

When should the training be completed?

The training should be completed once per year prior to participating in hiring activities. 

Where do I access the training?

The training is available will be available in Workday Learning starting July 1, 2026. Learn more about Workday Learning.

How long does the training take?

Approximately 20–25 minutes. 

Is this training required for every search? 

While the training does not need to be repeated for every individual search, participants are expected to complete the training annually and apply the practices consistently in all hiring activities. Please feel free to refer back to the training often to refresh your knowledge. 

How does this relate to the HR & Employment Practices Checklist?

This training reinforces the expectations outlined in the Employment Practices and Training Checklist – Civil Rights Compliance Office  which all hiring managers and search committees should follow to ensure compliance with UW policies. 

Will completion be tracked?

Yes. Completion is tracked in Workday Learning and may be reviewed to support compliance and consistency across hiring practices.
