UW & SEIU 925 Continuum College Negotiations Recap for March 12th 2025
Background
This recap details the third session for the negotiation for the collective bargaining agreement between SEIU 925-Continuum College and UW. Recaps are published online on the UW Labor Relations website.
UW – Initial Proposals
Article – Probation
This article matches much of the same language from the similar article in the SEIU 925 – IHME contract. In addition to that language, the Employer proposed changing the wording of classifications to job profiles.
Article – Management Rights and Responsibilities
This article matches much of the same language from the similar article in the SEIU 925 – IHME contract. In addition to that language, the Employer proposed to add language from the UAW Postdoc and UAW ASE contract that the Employer has the right and responsibility to decide who does the teaching. The Employer also proposed to change references to classification and reclassification to job profile assignments and position review.
UW – Counter Proposals
Article – Grievance Procedure
The Employer proposed to add a description of the specific events that occurred that resulted in the alleged violation, and the grievant’s position to the list of things included in the written grievance.
The Employer proposed to add that the Union and the University must begin the arbitration scheduling process and provide availability to the arbitrator within thirty (30) calendar days of the Union advancing the grievance to arbitration.
The Employer proposed to memorialize the existing SEIU 925 and WFSE 1488 panel of arbitrators for this bargaining unit.
Article – Corrective Action
The Employer agreed to much of the language proposed by the Union. The Employer proposed to add that employees can be notified orally in addition to in writing that upon request they shall be entitled to have a Union representative present when formal counseling, final counseling or dismissal is occurring. The Employer also proposed to remove reference to the discipline process as it is referred to as corrective action throughout the article.
Article – Preamble and Purpose
The Employer proposed small housekeeping edits to the section numbering as well as using the exact definition of the bargaining unit from PERC for the definition of who this contract applies to.
Article – New Employees
The Employer proposed one small housekeeping edit that should a new employee miss the opportunity to attend in the first week, they will be allowed to attend the one-hour Union orientation during regular work hours in a subsequent week.
Next Steps
The next UW & SEIU Continuum College bargaining session is scheduled for March 24th, 2025 and will be held virtually.
