UW & UAW Postdocs Negotiations Recap for January 4, 2023

Background

This recap details the eleventh session for the negotiation for the collective bargaining agreement between the UW and UAW Postdocs. Recaps are published online on the UW Labor Relations website.

UW Counter Proposals

Article 16- Non-discrimination and Harassment

In response to the Union, the Employer added language stating the University encourages anyone who feels they are being discriminated against or harassed to report the allegation(s) in accordance with University policies and procedures. The Employer also added language stating it is against University polices to retaliate against anyone making a good faith report of being discriminated against or harassed.

UAW Counter Proposals

Article 4- Appointments and Reappointments

In response to the Employer, the Union changed their proposal to now be the initial appointment of a Postdoctoral Scholar or Postdoctoral Scholar Fellow shall be for a minimum of one year and the reappointment of a Postdoctoral Scholar or Postdoctoral Scholar Fellow shall be for a minimum of two years.

Article 25- Titles and Classifications

In response to the Employer, the Union proposed current contract language with small housekeeping edits.

New Article-Housing

The Union counter proposed their housing proposal, with some changes. The counter proposal offered that  the University would make available affordable UW Housing for all Postdocs and the rent would not exceed 30% of an individual’s salary. The Union also proposed if there are not enough available units in UW Housing the University shall provide an annual subsidy to each Postdoctoral Scholar amounting to the difference between the average two bedroom annual rental rate in Seattle and 30% of the Postdoctoral Scholar’s salary/stipend.

The next UW & UAW Postdocs bargaining session is scheduled for January 9, 2023, and will be held virtually.
