UW – Teamsters 117 Negotiations Recap for June 23

Background

This recap details the eighth virtual session for the renewal of the collective bargaining agreement between the UW and Teamsters 117. Recaps are published online on the UW Labor Relations website.

Tentative Agreements

The parties signed tentative agreements to close the following provisions:

Article 5 – Union Recognition/Union Security and Dues Deduction

  • New language states that the Union would supply authorization for dues deduction to the Employer via a web based electronic reporting system

Article 7 – Union Business Activities/Leave

  • Current contract language

Article 8 – Employee Files

  • Added an exception to records that may be removed from an employee file, for those related to sexual misconduct

Side Letter XX – Oversight Committee

  • New language states that should the University create a an oversight committee that creates and/or proposes changes to policies and/or procedures that are mandatory subjects of bargaining, the Employer would fulfill its legal obligation to provide the Union notice and opportunity to bargain.

Teamsters Counter Proposals

Underpayment: The Union proposed that if an underpayment to an employee does not result in reimbursement by the subsequent available pay period, the employee would be paid one and one-half times the amount owed.

Fitness for duty: In response to the Employer, the Union proposed that fitness for duty would not be questioned for any issue that can be reasonably accommodated through the accommodation process. The Union made this proposal packaged with its initial proposal on the Teamsters Retirement Healthcare Trust.

Next Steps

The next three UW and Teamsters 117 bargaining sessions will be facilitated by a State-appointed mediator, and are scheduled to occur virtually on July 14, July 17, and July 24. If necessary, the parties will begin interest arbitration on August 6.
