UW – Teamsters 117 Negotiations Recap for May 21

Background

This recap details the fifth virtual session for the May 21 collective bargaining agreement between the UW and Teamsters 117. Recaps are published online on the UW Labor Relations website.

UW Counter Proposals

Seniority: In response to the Union, the Employer proposed language stating that voluntary overtime would be based on bargaining unit seniority.  The Employer maintained its proposal stating that leave without pay would be included in computing seniority.

Layoff: In response to the Union, the Employer proposed that when possible, the University would provide more than minimum 30 days’ notice for a layoff.

Inclement weather and suspended operations: In response to the Union, the Employer proposed language detailing existing University policy regarding suspended operations and inclement weather, stating in part that all employees in this bargaining unit are designated as essential.

Work related injury leave: In response to the Union’s proposal, the Employer proposed language clarifying existing policy and law regarding work related injury leave, including that employees who suffer a work-related injury or illness that is compensable under the state worker’s compensation law may select time loss compensation exclusively, leave payment exclusively, or a combination of the two. The Employer further proposed that it would attempt to find opportunities for modified duty that can be offered to employees in lieu of and/or after disability leave.

Employee rights: In response to the Union’s proposal, the Employer incorporated the Union’s proposed language stating that when an employee uses deadly force which results in the injury or death of a person, the employee would not be required to make a formal written or recorded statement for 72 hours after the incident (currently 48 hours).

Uniform: In response to the Union, the Employer proposed that jumpsuits would be issued upon hire, instead of after the probationary period, and that they would be replaced when no longer serviceable, but no sooner than every four years. The Employer also proposed that the number of shirts and trousers issued would be reduced from three of each to two of each.
