CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

The primary function of this job classification is to assist health care professionals in the delivery of direct patient care in an ambulatory patient care setting.

This job classification is distinguished from Medical Assistant and Medical Assistant – Certified by having a narrower scope of duties as permitted under the Medical Assistant – Registered classification in RCW 18.360.050.

This is a single-class series.

BASIC FUNCTION

Assist health care professionals in the delivery of direct patient care in an ambulatory patient care setting.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general supervision, perform duties assigned by a health care practitioner such as Physician or Nurse Practitioner.

Working under the license of the applicable provider, assist health care professionals in the examination and treatment of patients by performing duties such as rooming, obtaining vital signs, preparing patient and environment for treatment, conducting basic tests, preparing patients for, and assisting with, routine and specialty examinations, procedures, treatments, and minor office surgeries utilizing no more than local anesthetic.

The department may, by rule, prohibit duties authorized under subsection (4)(d)(v) of Washington State RCW 18.360.050 if performance of those duties by a Medical Assistant-Registered would pose an unreasonable risk to patient safety. Positions under this classification may also perform limited patient education and clerical reception functions.

TYPICAL WORK

Verify presence of medical records and x-rays prior to scheduled appointments; request existing records and x-rays as necessary;

Prepare medical record for clinic visit and document information to complete patient check-in process (or note patient cancellation/failure);

Meet and greet patients;

Observe and document in the medical record the patient’s physical and emotional condition and vital signs; recognize and report symptomology of common medical illnesses to physician or nurse;

Prepare and maintain examination and treatment areas;

Prepare patients for, and assist with, routine and specialty examinations, procedure, and treatments;

Conduct telephone and in-person screening limited to intake and gathering of information without requiring the exercise of judgment based on clinical knowledge;

Maintain medication and immunization records;

Screen and follow up on test results as directed by a health care practitioner;

Monitor patient flow in clinic to assure efficient clinic operations;

Schedule new and return appointment(s); use a computerized system to check patients in and out of clinics;

Transport patients and lab specimens;

Order medical and clerical supplies; stock examination rooms;

Perform other Medical Assistant-Registered duties as outlined in Washington State RCW 18.360.050 and approved by the applicable healthcare practitioner or representative of the department; and

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED equivalent

Desired Qualifications

Six months experience in a health care setting preferred.

Legal Requirement

Eligible for licensure in the State of Washington as a Medical Assistant-Registered; attestation must be completed by the applicable provider and submitted to the state within 7 days of hire. Licensure is not transferable between UW clinics/departments.

CPR certification required.
