DEFINITION

Perform skilled work in the installation and maintenance of automated door systems and related equipment at Harborview Medical Center.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This class requires specific knowledge pertaining to selection, installation and maintenance of door hardware and related mechanical devices. Perform installation and maintenance of automated door systems such as electronic, electro-mechanical, electro-hydraulic, and pneumatic. Install and maintain door systems and hardware to meet life safety, fire and ADA requirements. May design and fabricate unique components to meet specific institutional needs. May require knowledge and application of sound control devices.

TYPICAL WORK

Complete installation of new automated or manual door systems, sliding, swinging, or rolling. In connection with door work perform metal stud framing, masonry cutting, drilling, and grouting.

Troubleshoot, repair and maintain automated door systems, such as manual, electric, electronic, electro-mechanical, electro-hydraulic, and pneumatic.

Inspect, maintain and repair Life Safety Fire Door systems as well as all associated records for purposes of Regulatory Compliance required by JCAHO, DOH, OSHA, WSHA or other regulatory agencies.

Specify suitable hardware, doors, and automated equipment to meet institutional facilities requirements.

Install low voltage electronic wiring related to automatic doors.

Perform metal, sheet metal work and light gauge welding.

Repair or alter building structures from plans, sketches, instructions or blueprint specifications.

Install, repair or alter acoustical ceiling systems adding structural support systems as needed.

Adjust, repair or replace locks or weather stripping.

Operate power equipment such grinders, punch press, welders, saws, jointers, lathes, sanders, planers, boring and mortising machines; clean, sharpen, maintain and repair such equipment.

Coordinate work schedules of other trades to complete projects in a timely manner.

Develop preliminary cost estimates for installations and repairs.

Drive service truck as required; load and unload materials and supplies.

May lead and instruct helpers as required.

May perform work in other trades.

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – UW Contract Classified

Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a journey worker, OR full-journey status in a trade; OR four years’ applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis. Also requires certifications for Door Hardware Installer and light gauge welding within six months of employment.

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required.

Examination Requirements:

The examination (including written, E & T and oral components) will consist of a scored evaluation of the applicant’s training and experience as a carpenter or carpenter’s helper; knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of carpentry trades and safety precautions; ability to work from blueprints, plans and sketches; ability to estimate materials and time needed to complete jobs; and ability to use and maintain hand and power tools.
