CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Perform all aspects of live or automated daily board shift including board operation, announcing, newscasting, and producing on-air shows. Develop and produce interview and news segments and their essential elements. Key aspects of production include creating the pitch, script, tone, and audio and/or video components for KUOW programming. Generate audio, print, or video content that will be seen and heard across various KUOW platforms, such as broadcast, web, social media, and podcasts.

This is a single-class series, distinguished from Producer and Announcer by the combination of the duties of both roles.

BASIC FUNCTION

Serve as primary announcer and board operator for assigned shift. Assist in writing and production of stories and segments for KUOW programming. Complete assigned tasks under direct supervision to support podcast or broadcast programming.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Work under direct supervision to complete assigned tasks to support podcast or broadcast programs. Rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform aspects of production with beginner knowledge of the subject matter. Training and assistance are provided to complete assignments. Refer issues to higher-level staff. Produce, plan, write, and voice both live and automated content during assigned shift.

TYPICAL WORK

Work with higher-level staff to research assigned topics and select guests for interviews on KUOW.

Provide voice and production of underwriting spots.

Produce, plan, write, edit and voice break live and recorded content for podcast and broadcast programming, including stories for newscasts and producing excerpts of full-length segments for rebroadcast.

Develop and write online posts and produce broadcast excerpts of program content.

Monitor system and KUOW communications and news wire to provide programming updates.

Operate broadcast and satellite distribution software in conjunction with broadcast playback and automation software and systems.

Provide production support as assigned.

Back up other shifts as needed.

Perform other occasional on-air work including on-air fundraising.

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and one year of professional experience.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

CIVIL SERVICE EXEMPTION

Public Information: Managerial or professional level positions having substantial responsibility for planning and directing the development and communication of information designed to keep the public informed of the institution’s programs, accomplishments, and point of view. Individuals exercise discretion in determining content of written copy. Other duties may include creating ideas, laying out artwork, contacting media representatives, and representing the institution directly before the general public.
