CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Provide daily updates to KUOW digital content in alignment with the station’s editorial objectives. Collaborate with staff to edit and adapt journalism for our digital platforms.

This is the third level of a three-level series; the preceding level is Digital Editor/Reporter 2.

BASIC FUNCTION

Demonstrate advanced skills and expert knowledge in adapting KUOW content for digital platforms. Lead staff to edit, revise and enhance journalism for digital publication. Pitch and report news and stories with an emphasis on feature and enterprise reporting, work on special projects and higher-level assignments. Work closely with senior staff and provide editorial guidance in crafting and executing KUOW’s evolving digital strategy. Represent the digital team in the absence of senior staff.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Work under minimal direction to lead editing and/or creating digital content that aligns with KUOW’s journalistic standards and enhances digital presentation. Serve as a subject matter expert for the digital team to adapt stories for digital audiences. Independently produce digital content on a wide range of topics with particular focus on enterprise reporting and/or special projects. Make complex editorial decisions and collaborate with senior staff to make high-level editorial or strategic decisions. Regularly assign, instruct and check the work of others on the production team. Handle complex issues and problems and refer only the most unusual issues to higher-level staff.

This class is distinguished from the Digital Editor/Reporter 2 by the increased complexity and/or volume of high-level reporting.

TYPICAL WORK

Edit content from KUOW staff and lead the adaptation of journalism for digital platforms.

Prepare and publish digital journalism with an emphasis on feature and enterprise reporting, special projects, and higher-level assignments that align with station design standards, incorporating multimedia elements, interactive tools, data visualizations, and emerging technologies.

Independently coordinate with programming staff to edit and publish multimedia features.

Produce enterprise news and/or feature reports at an expert level for digital publication.

Develop a particular voice and/or beat.

Pitch and develop consistent enterprise reporting and/or special projects.

Maintain and cultivate a wide variety of sources; may focus on a particular area of interest in line with a beat or area of expertise.

Meet filing deadlines and productivity expectations of a Digital Editor/Reporter 3 as determined by senior staff.

Post breaking news and developing stories. Monitor and identify local news trends daily to create relevant original digital content.

Grow and engage digital audiences by interacting and adapting to published journalism.

Provide editorial guidance on visuals, the ethics of visuals, data visualization, photographs, or custom graphics.

Select and edit visuals to enhance written content, and secure permissions and licenses as necessary.

Work with senior staff to craft and execute KUOW’s evolving digital strategy.

Lead the digital team in all-staff, editorial, and other KUOW meetings and fill in in the absence of senior staff.

Represent the digital team and/or a particular initiative to KUOW and/or the audience as assigned.

Stay current with emerging technologies and best practices for digital journalism and provide training to station staff.

May also appear on broadcast, podcasts, and/or at KUOW community events to establish audience recognition as a lead voice of KUOW digital coverage.

Perform duties of Digital Editor/Reporter 1 and 2. Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and ten years of professional journalism experience.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

CIVIL SERVICE EXEMPTION

Public Information: Managerial or professional level positions having substantial responsibility for planning and directing the development and communication of information designed to keep the public informed of the institution’s programs, accomplishments, and point of view. Individuals exercise discretion in determining content of written copy. Other duties may include creating ideas, laying out artwork, contacting media representatives, and representing the institution directly before the general public.
