India COVID-19 Relief

India is facing an unprecedented global humanitarian crisis.

Confronted by the most extreme surge in COVID-19 infections and deaths since the pandemic began more than a year ago, while simultaneously facing a severe shortage of critical supplies, India’s healthcare system is overwhelmed. Meanwhile, the global vaccine rollout has been unequal, especially in low-income countries.

For those already living in crisis, the situation is devastating.

How you can help

As of May 6, India has documented over 21 million confirmed COVID-19 cases and over 230,000 deaths. While the Biden-Harris administration is providing some critical assistance, many nonprofits are stepping up to help.

Consider making a one-time gift or setting up monthly payroll deduction through the UWCFD to one of our member organizations actively responding to the crisis in India:

American Red Cross International Services (charity code 0338058): Through our International Services, the American Red Cross helps vulnerable individuals and communities around the world to prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters, complex humanitarian emergencies, and life-threatening health conditions.

Americares (charity code 0315518): Americares is working with communities, health workers and dedicated COVID-19 facilities to address the growing challenge of COVID-19 across India. They have established dedicated quarantine facilities and are supplying medical equipment such as ventilators, oxygen concentrators, and ICU equipment in addition to their existing prevention and mitigation programming. Read more.

CARE India (charity code 0315522): CARE works across 11 states in India with a particular emphasis on ending poverty and social injustice in the country. Given the current state of COVID-19 in India, CARE is helping local partners provide essential hospital services, expanding access to health workers, supplying additional beds and oxygen supply and much more.

Global Impact COVID-19 Relief Fund (charity code 0316711): Global Impact’s COVID-19 Relief Fund has provided over $1M in relief funding for COVID-19, supporting nonprofits that are combatting COVID-19, working toward a peoples’ vaccine and continuing other vital services during this pandemic. The situation in India has become a priority for Global Impact and our charity partners.

India Partners (charity code 0456910): India Partners is an international and humanitarian organization providing life-changing care to children and families living in extreme poverty in India. Covid-19 has created a disaster of enormous magnitude for the poor in India. Your gift will provide food and essentials to starving children and families.

International Relief Teams (charity code 0315516): India is facing a dire situation. With your help, IRT is planning to send a series of air shipments of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), to India to protect health workers now being overwhelmed by record numbers of COVID cases.

MAP (charity code 0315523): Countries like India are fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and MAP is working to rush lifesaving personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks, gloves, and coveralls to hospitals and healthcare workers on the front lines.

PATH (charity code 0316049): a global health nonprofit based in Seattle, has a team of more than 200 people working in India to procure oxygen supplies and accelerate Covid-19 testing and surveillance.

Project HOPE (charity code 0316050): Project HOPE is working with local partners and government officials to facilitate the rapid procurement and distribution of PPE, oxygen supplies, ICU equipment, ventilators, and other critical items to support the overwhelmed healthcare system. Initial plans target four states in India, coordinating with government officials to get supplies to hospitals and clinics where they are needed most.

International Medical Corps (charity code 1479246): IMC works in conflict areas around the world and is raising money for a campaign to help provide medical equipment, PPE, isolation facilities and other essential supplies in India.

OXFAM America (charity code 0316360): Oxfam is particularly targeting their support towards the poorest communities in India – those without sanitation who are using shared toilets and water. Migrant workers are especially at risk because of unemployment rates due to lockdowns. Oxfam India is providing food rations and cash to these vulnerable communities and assessing safety and sanitation needs with district officials in all 16 states.

UNICEF USA (charity code 0315489): Since the beginning of the pandemic, UNICEF has provided over 3.6 million people with water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) supplies in India, along with reaching over 660 million people with COVID-10 prevention education. After India’s second wave struck in late April, they have been delivering critical oxygen concentrators and diagnostic testing systems, hygiene supplies and PPE kits to protect health care workers. UNICEF in Mumbai also extended its support to an alliance of 150 community-based organizations that banded together to regularly clean and disinfect public toilets in the city’s most densely populated neighborhoods.

World Vision: World Vision has already reached 4.8 million people in India with aid targeted to help the poorest cope with the economic impacts of earlier lockdowns and COVID-19 prevention efforts. World Vision is redoubling efforts to support hospitals, health centers, and communities with personal protective equipment, surgical masks, sanitizer, and continued support for vulnerable families with cash and voucher assistance to ensure they can access food during shutdowns.
