CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Within the UW Libraries, utilize specialized knowledge and skills to provide conservation efforts for library materials.

BASIC FUNCTION

Support the libraries in conserving collections by providing generally complex maintenance and conservation efforts.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Reporting to the Director of Preservation Services, work in consultation with collection managers and preservation staff to establish priorities and coordinate conservation treatment. Perform complex conservation treatment for a wide variety of general and special collections materials which may include rare and unique paper-based library materials.

Coordinate the Libraries Conservation Center’s services with other Preservation Services to support the appropriate preservation of materials throughout the Libraries, including binding, marking, cataloging, reformatting, digitization, and exhibition.

TYPICAL WORK

Perform complex conservation treatment for a wide variety of general and special collections materials which may include rare and unique paper-based library materials;

Consult and collaborate with collection managers and preservation staff on creation of conservation plans;

Support the preservation and accessibility of collections through staff training, exhibition support, responding to preservation questions from staff and the public, disaster recovery and response, and environmental monitoring;

Manage and monitor budgets for conservation supplies, services, and hourly staff;

Use automated or electronic systems to track library materials being worked on in the conservation unit;

May supervise classified and hourly staff, and

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of relevant work experience. Successful supervisory and training experience. Demonstrated ability in bookbinding and book repair. Ability to independently evaluate and treat library material. Excellent manual dexterity.
