CLASS SERIES CONCEPT
Work with high school age youth as part of KUOW’s Youth Media program to introduce them to radio storytelling, journalism and multimedia production, producing multimedia content for KUOW’s broadcast and web platforms. This is the first level of a two-level series specific to RadioActive; the next level is Producer 2 – RadioActive.
BASIC FUNCTION
Mentor youth one-on-one to produce multimedia content for KUOW’s broadcast and web platforms.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under the supervision of the Senior Managing Producer, Radioactive, mentor youth one-on-one to produce multimedia content for KUOW’s broadcast and web platforms, and support workshops and activities that introduce youth to storytelling, journalism and multimedia production. Produce audio content, events and newsletters that amplify youth voices to KUOW’s audiences and build the RadioActive Youth Media community.
TYPICAL WORK
Typical working title is “RadioActive Youth Media Associate Program Producer”.
Mentor youth one-on-one to produce multimedia content. In collaboration with RadioActive Program Producer or KUOW Editor, guide youth in identifying areas of interest and in developing story ideas. Ensure program quality standards are applied to all interactions with youth;
Multimedia production: edit raw tape in Adobe Audition, produce audio promos, vox pops and spots for podcasts and, in collaboration with KUOW Editors, for broadcast. Prepare online copy and images for web postings. Apply KUOW editorial standards to online and broadcast content;
Event planning: Coordinate all RadioActive event planning, logistics, implementation and analysis;
Prepare materials for RadioActive workshops;
Media education instruction: In collaboration with the RadioActive Program Producers, facilitate workshops and activities that introduce youth to storytelling, journalism and multimedia production;
Coordinate creation of quarterly e-newsletters; draft copy and provide editing. Ensure deadlines for production are met;
Archive student productions: ensure audio is correctly archived and shared with partners;
May supervise volunteers, which may include minors; and
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree and one year of journalism experience as a producer or reporter, preferably in audio, radio or podcasting, or equivalent combination of education/experience. Volunteer experience may substitute for up to one year of education or paid experience.
