DEFINITION

Assists the pharmacist in technical pharmacy activities including the preparation and packaging of medications. Performs all duties under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under direct supervision, performs technical pharmaceutical functions.

TYPICAL WORK

Prepares medications for dispensing including prepackaging, counting, pouring, labeling and delivering medications;

Loads medication containers or unit dose drawers for the medication distribution system;

Packages sterile and non-sterile medication into single and multiple dose containers using appropriate techniques;

Assists in preparing pharmaceutical solutions for external, internal and intravenous use;

Monitors and replenishes drug stock in the pharmacy, floor stock in nursing medication areas and drug stock in emergency drug kits; inventories and orders medications;

Performs basic computer functions for medication preparation such as charge/credit, label generation, admission/discharge/transfer activity updates;

Answers telephone and responds to questions not requiring a pharmacist’s professional judgment;

Cleans designated areas of the pharmacy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – UW Contract Classified

High School graduation or GED Certificate

OR

equivalent education/experience.

LEGAL REQUIRMENT

State of Washington Pharmacy Assistant registration.
