Patient Services Specialist – Supervisor

CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Coordinate the daily patient flow and provide patient support services in an admitting, registration or patient care area in a medical center.

BASIC FUNCTION

Supervise staff in the Patient Services Specialists class series, and/or other assigned staff, direct the day-to-day clerical support operations and perform the work of supervised staff.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

With delegated authority, interview, recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary actions.

Under general direction, direct and perform the clerical and technical functions of assigned admitting, registration or patient care area (s).

TYPICAL WORK

Interview applicants and make recommendations for hire;

Train and orient new employees and/or volunteers to department;

Assign employee schedules, establish plan for emergency staff coverage and act upon leave requests;

May manage staff records including timekeeping records, obtain appropriate approvals and submit payroll.

Review and correct the work performed by others for compliance with established procedures;

Conduct employee performance evaluations;

Recommend disciplinary actions;

Prepare reports, manages relevant databases and data;

Identify and resolve problems or unusual situations; recommend changes to work flow, assignments, policies, procedures, etc. as necessary;

Monitor and evaluate policies and procedures to suggest operational changes;

Coordinate specialized departmental activities;

Assists in the preparation and maintenance of provider and clinic schedules;

May participate in budget preparation and administration;

May work with management, ED/QA and other staff on process improvements, developing training courses and planning ED/QA activities for staff.

May Participate in monitoring quality assurance plans;

Perform the work of the Patient Services Specialist levels 1, 2, 3, Lead and QA/Educator positions.

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – UW Contract Classified

Bachelor’s Degree in a medically related or public relations field AND Four years of experience as a Patient Services Specialist

OR High School graduation or equivalent and four years experience as a Patient Services Specialist and a UW Supervisory Skill Certificate;

OR equivalent education/experience.
