BASIC FUNCTION
Service and make minor repairs to automobiles, motorized farm equipment, and heavy construction or related equipment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Service and make minor repairs to automobiles, motorized farm equipment, and heavy construction or related equipment such as power generators and diesel engines; and/or independently overhaul light air-cooled engines such as lawn mowers, and small electrical motors.
TYPICAL WORK
Make minor repairs to cars, pickups, trucks, tractors and equipment driven by internal combustion engines by replacing door latches, lights, spark plugs, oil filters, wheel bearings, signal lights, distributors, ignition points, etc.;
Change oil; install anti-freeze; repair and mount tires; adjust brakes, lubricate chassis and other parts and assemblies as required;
Make repairs to small air-cooled engines and motors; overhaul as needed;
Wash, wax and clean interiors and exteriors of motorized equipment;
Operate gasoline pumps, car wash equipment, steam cleaners, electric and air-driven tire changing equipment;
Serve gas customers; dispatch vehicles; park cars; check and verify release slips and schedules; make entries to reports; keep fuel records; occasionally perform simple arithmetic computations;
Operate motor vehicle equipment as required;
Clean work areas;
May assist journey motorized equipment mechanics in performing tear down, over-haul, and in assembly of gasoline engines, transmissions, electrical parts, cooling systems, and other components;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
One year of work experience in a garage or service station, or equivalent experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
