BASIC FUNCTION
Service and repair automobiles, motorized farm equipment, and heavy construction or related equipment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Perform journey-level work in the repair and service of automobiles, motorized farm equipment, and heavy construction or related equipment such as power generators, hydraulic systems, and diesel engines.
TYPICAL WORK
Overhaul and rebuild gasoline and diesel engines on equipment such as graders, trucks, cranes, forklifts, sweepers, tractors, automobiles, portable generators, and pumps; remove and replace connecting rods, rings, bearings, drive shafts, etc.; grind valves, rewire electrical circuits, replace or repair brake shoes, brake cylinders, master cylinders, etc.;
Overhaul differentials and transmissions by disassembly, repair, replacement of parts within proper tolerances, and utilizing required tools;
Repair generators, alternators, and starters utilizing current and circuit testing devices as required;
Perform tuneups on standard and electronic ignition vehicles, replace spark plugs, wires, points, condensors, and related ignition parts;
Service and repair automotive air conditioning systems;
Perform welding and repairs to chassis of vehicles as required;
Maintain and repair hydraulic systems;
Operate computerized engine diagnostic and wheel alignment equipment, battery chargers, valve refacing and reseating machines, compression gauges, torque wrenches, dial indicator gauges, valve insert cutting machines, welders, drill presses, grinders, tachometers, reamers, timing lights, paint sprayers, and other tools and equipment required for performing repair and maintenance of automotive equipment;
Replace lights, belts and hoses;
Operate motor vehicles as required;
May perform sheetmetal work and repairs to bodies of vehicles;
May perform touch up spray painting of vehicles and equipment;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – UW Contract Classified
Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as an automotive or motorized equipment mechanic; OR full journey status as an automotive or motorized equipment mechanic in a union; OR four years of applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis.
