BASIC FUNCTION

Provide spoken language interpretation for patients, medical providers and staff to include sight and written translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpretation and/or provide training and act as a preceptor to assigned staff.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general supervision, provide consecutive and simultaneous interpretation, sight and written translation interpreting services in a medical setting and/or provide training and act as a preceptor to assigned staff.

TYPICAL WORK

Coordinate and develop translation of written or video-taped medical materials;

Participate in orientation and training of medical center staff on Interpretation Services and cultural beliefs and practices;

Precept new interpreter staff;

Provide spoken language interpretation to patients, medical providers and staff in person or over the telephone in complex medical settings;

Provide sight translation in the presence of the medical provider and/or other medical staff;

Consult with medical providers prior to or during interpretation encounters;

Assess the patients’ interpretation needs;

Explain and clarify cultural differences;

Assist patients to complete medical, financial, or other forms;

Complete documentation related to the interpretation encounters;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school graduation or equivalent AND three years interpretation and translation experience in a clinic or hospital setting AND medical interpreter certification or qualification either from Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters, or the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters

equivalent education/experience.
