CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Perform interpretation work requiring proficiency in oral and written English and the target language to assist limited English speaking patients to obtain the access to medical care.

BASIC FUNCTION

Provide spoken language interpretation for patients, medical providers and staff to include sight translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpretation.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general supervision, provide consecutive and simultaneous interpreting services in a medical setting.

TYPICAL WORK

Provide spoken language interpretation to patients, medical providers and staff in person or over the telephone;

Provide sight translation in the presence of the medical provider and/or other medical staff;

Consult with medical providers prior to or during interpretation encounters;

Assess the patients’ interpretation needs;

Explain and clarify cultural differences;

Assist patients to complete medical, financial, or other forms;

Complete documentation related to the interpretation encounters;

Provide appointment reminder calls to patients;

Assist with the translation of written or video taped medical materials;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school graduation or equivalent AND two years interpretation experience in a clinic or hospital setting AND medical interpreter certification or qualification either from Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters, or the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters.
