BASIC FUNCTION
Serve as second assistant engineering officer aboard an ocean research ship of approximately 2000 gross tons.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under general supervision, serve as second assistant engineering officer in the operation and maintenance of propulsion and auxiliary machinery of a diesel electric powered ocean research ship, 6000 HP.
TYPICAL WORK
Stand engine room watch as operating engineer of propulsion or auxiliary machinery;
Direct engineering department personnel as assigned;
Instruct department’s in-service program in engineering;
Provide direction to personnel doing routine maintenance and assist in emergency repair of propulsion or auxiliary machinery and electrical systems;
Maintain operating and maintenance logs and records;
Serve as principal assistant to Chief Marine Engineer for fueling operations;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – UW Contract Classified
Legal Requirement
U.S. Coast Guard Second Assistant Engineer’s license valid for operation of a 6000 HP inspected ocean motor vessel.
