DEFINITION

Perform routine work in the cleaning and care of laboratory glassware and materials in laboratory work areas; lead assigned laboratory helpers; perform simple routine laboratory tests under supervision.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions allocated to this class are distinguished by the requirement for routine and repetitive work in washing, sterilizing, preparation, sorting, and restoring of glassware and related laboratory materials and for cleaning and stocking the laboratory work areas; direct assigned laboratory helpers in performing similar duties; perform simple repetitive laboratory tests as required.

TYPICAL WORK

Lead and direct assigned laboratory helpers in performing work in the laboratory;

May perform simple, routine, and repetitive laboratory tests and procedures as directed;

Decontaminate, clean, and sterilize glassware and other materials;

Recover soiled or contaminated glassware or laboratory materials in the laboratory and transport to cleaning areas; care for laboratory equipment by cleaning; prepare glassware and materials for storage; deliver glassware and materials to storage areas and store as required;

Prepare various chemicals according to instructions and fill containers;

Care for animals by keeping cages clean and supplied with fresh bedding and keeping animals watered and fed;

Order supplies in accord with instructions; perform clerical duties as required;

May care for experimental plants;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – UW Contract Classified
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS – Classified Non-Union

One year’s experience as a Laboratory Helper, or equivalent.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Examination Requirements:

A job element examination (including written, E & T, and oral components) scored on the basis of job related experience, training, skill, ability, and other elements which are established through job analysis.
