BASIC FUNCTION

Perform specialized or technical duties that are specific to health information management. Organize and perform work related to the program specialty independent of the lead or supervisor. Represent the specialized program to staff and clients, both internal and external to the medical center.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general supervision, perform duties requiring specific knowledge and expertise of the specialty program. Share knowledge and expertise of the specialty program to staff and customers. Maintain accurate production and statistical information in relation to the specialty program.

Assist in the coordination of specialized division activities in one of the following programs within Health Information Management Patient Record and Information Control, Utilization Management, Coding and Data collection, Medical Transcription, and Tumor Registry.

TYPICAL WORK

Serve as a primary contact person to provide accurate information concerning the program specialty; provide information relating to policies and procedures for the specific program and perform duties that interact with other staff members both internal and external to the medical center;

Handle technical and medical information in a variety of formats (paper, micrographic, and electronic) including the establishment, maintenance, filing, retrieval, and purging of information from both database and the patient record.

Determine the appropriateness of access to patient information and confidentiality both external and internal users in compliance with institution, state and federal regulations.

Abstract information from a variety of sources, databases, and patient records, for internal and external use.

Prepare statistical reports as required.

Monitor the content of databases and individual patient records for accuracy, timeliness, and completeness.

Perform the duties of division employees and other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – UW Contract Classified
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS – Classified Non-Union

High School graduation or equivalent and two years of experience in the program area;

OR

Equivalent education/experience/training.
