BASIC FUNCTION

Coordinate engineering functions of an institutional fire protection program.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Coordinate fire protection engineering projects requiring the application of comprehensive engineering knowledge and applicable regulations. Conduct technical review of fire safety programs, plans, and procedures developed by consulting architects, engineers, and/or department personnel. Lead assigned personnel.

TYPICAL WORK

Regularly assign, instruct, and check the work of employees;

Direct professional personnel involved in the development, design, and final approval of plans and specifications for life safety equipment, systems, and construction of capital alterations and new installations;

Develop design criteria for life safety systems: analyze, review, and guide the work of consultants, engineers, and contractors through the design, construction, and acceptance phases of projects;

In collaboration with department administrators, review, and approve such documents as mechanical, electrical, and architectural change orders, purchase orders, and/or other documents affective life safety system design and installation;

Initiate and maintain contacts with local, city, county, state, and federal agency staffs involved with life safety and fire protection engineering applications;

Represent the institution in technical code and standard committees;

May perform duties of Fire Protection Engineer;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – UW Contract Classified
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS – Classified Non-Union

Certification as a registered professional fire protection engineer or certification as a safety professional (fire) or professional safety engineer (fire); AND three years of experience as a Fire Protection Engineer or equivalent.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
