CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Treat donated bodies for dissection and cremation.

BASIC FUNCTION

Lead assigned staff in treating donated bodies with antiseptic and preservative substances for dissection and cremation. Must lead at least one full-time employee (1.0 FTE) or an equivalent combination of Embalmers and part-time staff. Maintain records relative to the donation and disposition of remains in accordance with state regulations and statutes.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Regularly assign, instruct and check the work of others. Oversee the monthly reporting, record keeping and billing processes, ensuring they adhere to established policies and procedures.

TYPICAL WORK

Lead the work of assigned staff;

Maintain legal records regarding donations of human remains to the medical school, including death certificates, computer and paper records of utilization, storage, transfer, cremation and disposition;

Maintain inventories of chemicals and supplies and order replacements as needed; apply principles of sterile technique with respect to biohazards;

Maintain monthly log of activities requiring billing; oversee submission of monthly summary to Director for preparation of billing vouchers;

Maintain storage and inventories of morgue and teaching laboratories;

Assist in decision-making in regard to acceptability of potential donor remains per established program guidelines;

Prepare cremated remains for burial or disposition according to instructions of next-of-kin and applicable statutes and regulations;

Preserve, disinfect, and store human remains using the anatomical method of embalming;

Operate crematory, perfusion apparatus, bandsaw, steam spray cleaning equipment, forklift machine and miscellaneous hand instruments; provide basic operational and cleaning maintenance and log of operation;

Assist faculty in teaching and research activities occurring in the morgue and teaching laboratories;

Prepare materials for laboratory use; and

Perform other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Current license to practice as an embalmer in the State of Washington or equivalent education and experience.
