CLASS SERIES CONCEPT
Diagnose malfunctions, maintain, repair, install, test, develop and fabricate electronic equipment and apparatus for use in various fields such as research, science, facilities maintenance, and power. Provide technical support to professional and technical personnel involved in experimental or developmental research projects.
This series is distinguished from the Media Maintenance Technician series by working on a variety of electronics equipment used in various fields such as research, facilities maintenance, power, science, etc.
This series is distinguished from the Computer Maintenance Technician series by maintaining and/or repairing computer equipment which is integrated or interfaced with scientific, or various experimental test apparatus.
This series is distinguished from the Engineering Technician series by spending a majority of time in the maintenance and repair of electronic equipment and apparatus.
BASIC FUNCTION
Perform entry-level electronics work troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, installing, and testing various analog and/or digital electronic equipment or apparatus used in various fields such as research, facilities maintenance, and power.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under general supervision, perform routine troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, installation, assembly, and testing activities such as constructing simple electronic circuits and assemblies; constructing punch block panels; making module or board swaps; delivering and installing equipment; calibrating test equipment; repairing emergency lighting, switching, battery systems, or power supply circuits.
TYPICAL WORK
Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, calibrate and test mechanical, electro-mechanical, or electronic equipment or apparatus such as meters, gauges, power supply circuits, recorders, relay controls, lighting, two-way radios, clock or fire alarm systems;
Use electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, ohmmeters, multimeters, function generators, calibrators, bridge capacitance meters to troubleshoot equipment malfunction(s) to system, board or component level; use computer-aided diagnostic software to locate malfunction(s);
Perform mechanical or electro-mechanical repair(s); perform electronic repair(s) to system, board, or component level; calibrate and/or test for proper operation;
Perform preventive maintenance and/or basic warranty work on electronic and electronic test equipment; test, adjust, and calibrate to appropriate standards;
Construct simple electrical circuits or assemblies designed by others for use in the field or laboratory involving soldering components to circuit boards, connecting boards to power supply, and fabricating enclosure; use hand and power tools such as drill presses, grinders, band saws, soldering guns, torches;
Assist senior level Electronics Technicians in the installation of electronic equipment or apparatus for use in the field or laboratory;
Confer with faculty, staff, clients, vendors, students and/or supervisors in determining equipment problems or fulfilling service requests;
May direct the work of others;
May order, stock, and store electronic components such as transistors, resistors, capacitors, circuit boards, inductors, tubes, connectors, cables, meters, fuses, etc; may maintain database files for equipment inventory;
May perform limited maintenance or repair on computers;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – UW Contract Classified
Two years of experience/training as an electronics technician
OR
An Associate’s Degree in Electronics Technology or similar training OR equivalent education/experience.
