BASIC FUNCTION
Lead staff engaged in the construction and maintenance of costumes and accessories for theatrical productions.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Regularly assign, instruct and check the work of others. Under general direction, lead and coordinate all aspects of costume construction, patterning, tailoring, fitting, and execution of a wide variety of era costumes, accessories, and multi-media garments.
TYPICAL WORK
Working directly from the designers sketches, assign, instruct and direct work of others in patterning and costume construction techniques; check work of others to ensure quality control standards are maintained;
Draft and/or drape original patterns by either developing a pattern from the actors measurements or draping fabric on a dress form to create a pattern that reproduces the designers sketch and maintains the style of the period;
Construct costumes and accessories from patterns using tailoring techniques, specialty hand sewing and pressing techniques required to shape and stabilize the fabric, and other costume construction methods;
Adjust and alter the size and shape of costumes to conform to the actors shape and the designers sketch;
Assist shop supervisor and faculty in advising designers in the analysis of and development of solutions for construction problems related to historical and modern clothing, including millinery, armor, jewelry, footwear, and accessories;
Assist in the maintenance of shop equipment and the enforcement of safety regulations relating to the operation of power sewing machines, steam irons, steam jacketed dye kettles, hazardous materials, and washer/dryer;
Advise on the ordering of supplies and equipment;
Train staff and student assistants;
May use computer skills in wardrobe inventory, measurements, and general word processing;
May teach related theater classes;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – UW Contract Classified
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS – Classified Non-Union
Two years college training in costume or vocational sewing, pattern making, and fabric cutting AND three years professional theater costuming experience
OR
equivalent education/experience.
