BASIC FUNCTION

Perform certified, senior-level maintenance work on major, high-risk, high-impact, mission-critical FCC registered class A PBX and associated telecommunications system equipment; install, troubleshoot, and repair communications equipment, computers, peripherals, and/or voice communication or computer network systems. Design, fabricate, and install specialized interfaces, controls, or data communications equipment.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general direction, in a medical center environment perform complex troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, installation, and testing activities for telecommunication/video/computer and/or telecommunication/video/data communication network systems such as designing and fabricating specialized interfaces and communication links; complete complex installation projects; develop and implement preventive maintenance programs; and consult with and advise departmental customers on the acquisition of new telecommunications equipment.

TYPICAL WORK

Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, maintain, assemble, install, configure and test highly complex, multi-service telecommunications system equipment, malfunctions and failures; develop, implement and perform preventive maintenance for assigned communication systems;

Design and fabricate specialized interfaces, file transfers, data gathering and processing apparatus for systems, control apparatus, or telecommunications equipment;

Design, construct and install communications links between data terminal and data communications equipment such as terminals, work stations, printers and computer ports;

Complete complex adds, moves and changes such as moving entire departments, completing systems upgrades, and adding major components to existing and new systems;

Consult, research solutions and advise departmental customers on acquisition of new telecommunication equipment; provide design recommendations, equipment lists, project costs, programming, installation, testing, and training;

Use electronic test equipment to troubleshoot, repair and calibrate equipment malfunction(s) to system, board, or component level;

Maintain and/or modify electrical power and conversion and distribution systems;

Confer with manufacturer’s representatives in determining hardware and software problems;

Complete work orders and repair tickets for such work as resolving system problems, installing, connecting, moving, repairing, and programming telecommunication devices;

Install client software for server/client computer telephone systems; install software/hardware in personal computers and connect to local network; configure network settings in NT Windows environment;

Develop, or oversee the development and maintenance of, an inventory of spare parts and supplies;

Fabricate cables for use in interfacing peripherals with computers and telecommunications equipment;

Prepare and submit warranty claims, parts and documentation associated with warranty repairs to vendors;

May direct the work of others;

May maintain all appropriate documentation on equipment and systems in department;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – UW Contract Classified

One year of experience as a Communications Technician 1

OR

equivalent education/experience.
