DEFINITION

Lead echocardiographers, cardiac sonographers and others; assist in coordinating the operation of a cardiac ultrasound department; independently perform, assess, and document results of non-invasive and invasive highly complex clinical and research diagnostic cardiac ultrasound procedures and related physiological procedures to develop provisional working diagnosis of patients referred for evaluation of heart disease.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Regularly assign, instruct, and check the work of others. Under general direction, perform administrative duties to coordinate the daily operation of the department such as prioritizing and coordinating patient flow; reviewing lab records and patient charge documents for accuracy and completeness; and verifying and authorizing payroll documents.

TYPICAL WORK

Lead sonographers performing cardiac ultrasound procedures, student interns, and other department support staff;

Coordinate clinical activities and services; ensure adequate staffing for department operation;

Participate in coordinating the patient schedule; prioritize the scheduling of patients based on patient acuity;

Review lab records and patient charge documents for accuracy and completeness;

Assist in the development of departmental policies and procedures;

Provide feedback on staff performance; review and participate in the scheduling of staff; verify staff timesheets;

Initiate orders for departmental supplies and equipment repair;

Perform the duties of Cardiac Sonographers or Echocardiographers;

May approve changes or patient additions to the department schedule;

May act as liaison for the department with attending physicians, house staff, ancillary hospital and health sciences staff, nursing unit staff, and other medical community health care specialists;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Current Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) certification through American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS)
OR
Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) certification through Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI)

AND

One year of laboratory experience as a Cardiac Sonographer 2 or Cardiac Sonographer Specialist,
OR
Two years of laboratory experience as a Cardiac Sonographer 1 or Echocardiographer

OR

Equivalent education/experience.
