CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Perform animal care duties; provide care for animals and animal facilities.

BASIC FUNCTION

Perform specialized skilled animal husbandry functions.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Independently perform duties and administrative tasks requiring specialized knowledge of technical aspects of animal care.

TYPICAL WORK

Perform duties of Animal Technician 2;

Perform tasks in support of specialized programs, projects, or administrative duties requiring an advanced level of technical and/or mechanical skill and knowledge, as well as significant independence and autonomy. Areas may include BSL3 facility, gnotobiotic core, weekend lead, clinical care, and enrichment coordination.

May assign, review and approve the work of other Animal Technicians, and train Animal Technicians;

Assist in ensuring that proper animal husbandry procedures are followed by all husbandry staff, in accordance with applicable regulations and standard operating procedures;

Identify specialized animal care requirements for research projects;

Provide basic medical treatments under the direction of veterinary staff;

May administer injectable medications, collect swabs and blood samples for laboratory analysis and/or monitor general post-operative condition;

May perform research experiment activities under appropriate direction;

May have work assignments at more than one Animal Facility;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT), Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification, OR Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification.

AND

Two years of experience as an Animal Technician 2 or equivalent;

OR

one year of experience as an Animal Technician 2 or equivalent and one year of college with major study in animal or life science.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
