BASIC FUNCTION

Lead the work of Medical Assistants and others in the clinical operation of a patient care setting. Perform duties required to assist health care professionals in the examination and treatment of patients, such as preparation of the patient and environment, conducting basic laboratory and electrocardiogram tests, care of the patient post-treatment, patient education, and clerical reception functions.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general direction, regularly assign, instruct and check the work of others. Assist in the hiring of staff; provide feedback for performance evaluations; participate in the training and orienting of staff; identify and help resolve staff and operational issues.

TYPICAL WORK

Lead the work of Medical Assistants and others;

Schedule and assign Medical Assistants and others to ensure appropriate staffing;

Train Medical Assistants and others; serve as a resource to other clinical staff, maintain training and orientation material for Medical Assistants and others;

Participate in interviewing applicants and training and orienting new employees; provide information to supervisor for hiring decisions and employee performance evaluations;

Monitor and evaluate policies and procedures to suggest operational changes;

Monitor compliance of diagnostic test follow up;

Ensure completion of billing encounter forms for the work unit;

Organize and maintain the inventory program of medical and clerical supplies;

Participate in conferences and meetings, represent the work unit on organizational initiatives;

Schedule routine and special procedures such as sigmoidoscopy, joint aspiration, surgical biopsy, amniocentesis, and lumbar puncture; prepare patients for and assist health care professionals with the procedures and monitor patients condition following procedures;

Recognize emergent/urgent problems and provide basic telephone screening;

Perform the work of a Medical Assistant;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified

Completion of a Medical Assistant course accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or other recognized regional or national accreditation board AND one year experience as a Medical Assistant;

OR

High school graduation or equivalent AND two years of experience as a Medical Assistant providing direct patient care in a health care setting AND eligible for State of Washington certification designation as Medical Assistant – Certified ;

OR

equivalent education/experience.
