BASIC FUNCTION

Lead pharmacists. Direct, develop, implement, and evaluate specific program areas within the pharmacy. Provide oversight of the specific program development and integration into the pharmacy department.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the lead worker level of the series. Positions are designated with lead responsibility to regularly assign, instruct, and check the work of other pharmacists.

TYPICAL WORK

Develop and direct specific pharmaceutical program(s). Independently provide accountability for the program area, functioning with a high degree of autonomy, and offering expertise in the program area inter- and intra-departmentally and to the community;

Develop, review, and update policies and procedures of assigned program(s);

Direct the operation of the assigned area in the pharmacy department; Provide oversight for prioritization of program activities;

Regularly assign, instruct and check the work of pharmacists and other staff; Provide performance feedback to management;

Participate in the training, development, and education of pharmacists, residents, and interns;

Collaborate with Manager to assure pharmacy staff competency assessment occurs in a timely manner;

Provide primary preceptorship of pharmacy residents and student pharmacists;

Participate in quality improvement activities for the assigned program area;

Assure compliance with all pharmacy laws and regulations;

Provide drug information and in-services to physicians, nurses, patients, and pharmacy staff;

Participate in collaborative research projects with healthcare professionals, pharmacy residents and student pharmacists;

Perform the duties of the Pharmacist classification; and

Perform other duties assigned.

LEGAL REQUIREMENT(S)

State of Washington Pharmacist license.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Three years experience in pharmacy practice. Months spent in the completion of an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists accredited residency training program may substitute month-for-month for the experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license.
