CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Positions in this series perform examinations, establish diagnoses, and determine appropriate treatment or referral for medical problems.

BASIC FUNCTION

Provide medical care to patients including examinations, diagnosis, prescription and treatment within the scope of applicable licensure.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general supervision of an attending physician, incumbents examine, diagnose and treat patients within the scope of applicable licensure.

TYPICAL WORK

As a member of an integrated health care team, record medical histories, perform physical examinations, order and/or perform diagnostic tests, evaluate test results, establish diagnoses and prescribe medication and/or treatments;

Perform minor surgical procedures such as suturing lacerations and incising and draining abscesses, including administration of local anesthesia;

Provide health education; assist with proper utilization of community social and health care resources;

Assist in the clinical training of various levels of health care professionals, participate in continuing education;

Participate in research activities; conduct literature reviews, collect and collate research data; assist with the preparation of materials for publication;

Evaluate daily staffing levels and adjust patient-flow accordingly;

May lead and/or provide direction to clinical support staff;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Licensure as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner in the State of Washington or a Physician's Assistant (PA) in the State of Washington, or equivalent legal license/certification.

Must be eligible to receive hospital staff appointments for adjunct staff membership by the organized medical staff of the hospital under Medical Staff By-Laws for Hospital-based positions.
