Marine engineering officers operate and maintain machinery and engineering systems aboard ship.
BASIC FUNCTION
Serve as third assistant engineering officer aboard an ocean research ship of approximately 2000 gross tons.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under general supervision, serve as third assistant engineering officer in the operation and maintenance of propulsion and auxiliary machinery of a diesel electric powered ocean research ship, 6000 HP.
TYPICAL WORK
Stand engine room watch as operating engineer of propulsion or auxiliary machinery;
Direct operation of engineering department personnel as assigned;
Direct routine maintenance of deck machinery, refrigeration and air conditioning;
Maintain operating and maintenance logs and records;
Perform related duties as required.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS - Classified Non-Union
Legal Requirement
A U.S. Coast Guard Third Assistant Engineer's license valid for operation of a 2000 HP inspected ocean motor vessel.
